Im Jahre 2002 fand der erste WWE Draft statt. Vince McMahon und Ric Flair waren damals die Besitzer der WWE. Flair kaufte laut der Storyline die WWE-Anteile von Shane und Stephanie McMahon auf und machte Vince McMahon das Leben schwer. Am 25. März 2002 wurde ein großer Schritt in der WWE-Geschichte gewagt, für die die WWE auch heutzutage noch von Vielen stark kritisiert wird: Die Brand Extension.

Ric Flair wurde für RAW, Vince McMahon für SmackDown! verantwortlich. Vince McMahon gewann einen Münzwurf und durfte somit den Draft beginnen. Die ersten 20 Superstars wurden in der RAW-Sendung vom 25. März 2002 gewählt, der Rest anschließend auf der WWE-Homepage.
