Despite rumors indicating that John Cena will serve as the special guest referee for the Brock Lesnar vs. Jinder Mahal match at Survivor Series, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that "it isn't a lock" that Cena is the referee and that WWE is also considering a couple other people for that role.

Meltzer added that in the end, it will probably end up being Cena because he isn't sure if the other people being discussed will even agree to fill that role. Either way, the plan is to end up with a special ref in the match whose presence in the same ring as Brock Lesnar is intended to be "intriguing" and when names such as Undertaker and Goldberg were brought up, Meltzer said he didn't get the sense either of them were being considered.

Vince McMahon Considering Two Huge Names For Special Referee Role At WWE Survivor Series

We've noted before how WWE is looking to have a special referee for the WWE Champion Jinder Mahal vs. WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar match at the November 19th Survivor Series pay-per-view.

John Cena is rumored for the role, which could lead to Cena challenging Mahal, something Jinder has pushed for WrestleMania 34. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that Vince McMahon was also considering The Rock and WWE Hall of Famer Steve Austin for the role.

No word yet on talks with Rock or Austin but the issue would be if they want to work the match, and with The Rock the main issue would be if his schedule would allow it, and how much WWE would have to pay him. It's unlikely that a Lesnar vs. Rock or Lesnar vs. Austin match would come out of the special referee gig at Survivor Series. The Observer notes that while Austin is done as a wrestler, there is still the intrigue of he and Lesnar being in the ring together.

What men will represent Team Raw and Team SmackDown at Survivor Series?

Survivor Series is right around the corner and some big news is breaking concerning who fans should expect in the spots for the men's Survivor Series team representing Raw and SmackDown Live. Kurt Angle's WWE return after eleven years away from Vince McMahon and Company's squared circle has also reportedly left the door wide open to perform once again according to Mike Johnson of PW Insider Elite via an audio update.

Kurt Angle's return to the ring might have been a last-minute replacement for Roman Reigns after he suffered an awfully times illness, but it was also long awaited. But since Kurt Angle performed so brilliantly in his TLC match alongside Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose it leaves even more of a possibility that Angle will be lacing up his boots even more often.

Mike Johnson updated subscribers of PW Insider's Elite service on WWE's Survivor Series plans and there was some massive news.

Johnson reports that Kurt Angle is scheduled to return to action at Survivor Series as Captain of Team Raw during the men's Survivor Series elimination match opposite Shane McMahon who will lead Team SmackDown into battle.

He also had a list of the expected participants in the men's Survivor Series teams contingent on Roman Reigns being cleared for action. After all, Reigns isn't cleared yet and might miss a majority if not all of WWE's upcoming European tour while he recovers from illness.

Johnson also revealed the expected participants for Team SmackDown are Shinsuke Nakamura, Bobby Roode, Randy Orton, Shane McMahon, and AJ Styles.

This kind of team structure gives a chance for many amazing moments. Not only will fans have a chance to see AJ Styles and Kurt Angle lock up in the ring but Shane McMahon and Kurt Angle also have a storied history with each other. AJ Styles and Samoa Joe have shared the ring as well.

This kind of booking decision may not be intentional, but it is certainly a special treat for Impact Wrestling fans as well as the WWE Universe. Survivor Series looks like it will be a game-changing event if WWE has anything to say about it.

During preliminary discussions, regarding how to the book the matches and results at the Survivor Series PPV, it’s being said that neither writing team were willing to see their brand members weakened and a lot of the discussions ended in deadlock.
