Update on ROH Contract Situation
Just to answer some emails concerning the ROH contract situation, when Gabe Sapolsky was fired by ROH last year, there were still certain top guys who were not under contract. Part of a deal that was put together with the HD Network, was that the guys needed be under contract. However, certain top guys were not signing their deals, while others did.
Several top guys that are still in ROH had a clause put in their contract that states that if they notify ROH management (Cary Silken), they can get out of their contract at any time after 30 days of giving notice.
Basically, this would allow ROH talent to leave ROH whenever they wanted. However, HD was not aware of this. Syd Eick, who has been accused of stealing money by many people inside & outside of the company from Cary when he works the door, set up the HD deal. Syd told the HD representatives that everyone signed contracts, but failed to mention that there was a clause in there just to get the remaining hold-outs to sign the contract, thinking that the talent would never leave the company.
Apparently the rumors of WWE taking notice of ROH are true, as several thought initially it was just the internet writers and fans making a mountain out of ant hill. However, ROH is in WWE's radar, due to the Flair situation and now because ROH is on Monday nights. WWE doesn't see ROH as a threat or anything, (WWE doesn't even consider that joke TNA as a threat), but WWE knows what they need to do to stunt ROH's momentum.
According to someone close to someone within WWE creative, there have been talks in WWE creative about taking a look at the recent ROH shows and to come up with characters for some of the talent. WWE is expected to be handpicking more guys, with The Briscoe Brothers and Claudio Castagnoli on the top of that list.
While many fans have made comparisons to ROH and ECW in the past, who would've ever thought 15 years ago that guys like Benoit, Sabu, Tommy Dreamer, RVD, Jericho, Dudley Boyz, Taz, etc would go on to the WWE and reach success, star in Wrestlemania and win championship gold?
Now, just looking ahead, down the line, we could see Wrestlemania's with guys like Low Ki, CM Punk (already has been there), Matt Sydal, American Dragon, Nigel McGuinness, The Briscoes, Claudio, etc. Who knows, with Cary Silken taking a huge loss with ROH in recent times, WWE might even wind up holding the rights to the ROH library one day. This is of course, all speculation, but not too far from a possible reality.
If ROH is to go under, as many are predicting, while some wrestlers would go back to the indy scene or possibly WWE or TNA, the people that would lose the most would be the office staff. Current employee Ross Abrams is described as "inept" and "clueless". We are also told that he is obsessed and has a raging hard-on for people he used to work with in Langhorne, PA. He has no skills to offer any wrestling promotion, unless the WWE is looking for a guy to fold T-Shirts at the merchandise stands. Perhaps he could go back to his former job at Eckerds.
Another employee, Syd Eick, who has been with ROH from day one, is more financially set. Syd has been described as "the used cars salesman" of ROH, where he is known to be quick when making deals. Syd is also involved in real estate and is doing well for himself there and does not need wrestling. We've been told that Syd is such a great con man that he'd be perfect if he ever decided to run for a political office seat.
Speaking of the ROH office, Cary Silken has closed the office, as the office is not open 5 days a week anymore. Several employees have either been fired from their office jobs (Alex Payne, rumored to be linked to Cary in the past) or have had their hours reduced. ROH is in a complete cost-cutting mode as deals like the Flair have hurt them big time, and led to ROH bouncing checks on wrestlers, something that is usually reserved for scumbag loser promoters like Jac Sabboth. There is no honor in a rubber check.
There was also talk about ROH announcing the end (Ironically the song (By the Doors) featured on former booker Gabe Sapolsky's Myspace page) at the NYC show in September. However HD gave ROH a bail-out and convinced Cary Silken to remain in operation. There also has been a major conflict between Silken's right hand man, Syd Eick and booker Adam Pearce, but then again, it doesn't seem like anyone has anything nice to say about Syd, and the only time people say Syd is smiling is when he's working the front door at ROH events.
Again, to make the ECW/ROH comparison again on this site, just like how TV killed ECW, TV might just kill ROH, as it is their exposure on TV that made ROH spend more money (Flair deal, which wound up backfiring), get away from their DVD business model, spend more on production, and made WWE take notice of what ROH was doing.
In other news that might interest ROH fans, everyone knows how popular facebook is and how that is all the rage, so take this for what it is, but Rob Feinstein & Gabe Sapolsky, (not going to recap that history, if you're reading this, then you know) are "friends" on facebook and I have been told by many teenagers that this is a major thing.
It has been said and done many times before, but two people who fucking hate each other can become best of friends at the drop of a hat, when they have the same common enemy. I'd imagine Cary Silken, Ross Abrams and Syd Eick aren't Feinstein's or Sapolsky's favorite people right now.
We'll have more soon.
